Instrument Loop Diagrams


Instrument Loop Diagrams represent a single control loop on just one drawing. Loop diagrams are typically done for complex control systems with numerous Inputs and Outputs (I/O) and connected to a central controller such as a PLC, DCS or some other Hybrid control system. Loop diagrams can be just one input, just one output or a mix of inputs and outputs. Loop diagrams are an aid in installing the equipment during the building process and in trouble shooting maintenance issues after the process is running.

For example, a pressure indicating loop diagram would show the pressure sensing element, the wiring connections on the pressure transmitter, the wiring from the field device, including any terminations, and the connection to the central control system. A typical control loop would show a pneumatically actuated valve and a set of limit switches verifying the valves position as either open or closed.
